A CAREER IN THE FAST LANE

Michael Brennan from Nelson really has got his career on track! He's just completed a GCSE in Engineering at Pendle Training, but when he's not in the classroom the 16 year old is busy preparing his Formula 2 stock car for its next race.

For Michael, engines and cars have been a keen hobby for years, so when he got a chance to pick Engineering as a GCSE option while at Mansfield High School he jumped at it:

"I was doing other subjects like maths, English and science but wanted to do something more practical too."

Over the past 2 years, Michael and 15 other pupils have been spending one day per week at Pendle Training in Nelson, getting to grips with the basics of engineering and the theory behind the key concepts:

"It's been excellent, designing with 3D CAD, learning how things are made and using machines in the workshop ... the tutors have been great and I've also learnt the importance of accuracy."

This experience and knowledge learnt at Pendle Training has been perfect preparation for his first full time job, which he starts this summer. Michael will be joining AW Commercials in Waterfoot as an apprentice mechanic, helping them to repair and refurbish vehicles for big transport fleets.

But he still intends to spend as much of his spare time as possible racing and driving his own Formula 2 stock car in competitions across the UK. He already has a host of competition wins under his belt and is the current British Champion.

Michaels tutor, Tony Shaw said he has been an ideal candidate:

"Michael always applied himself, which resulted in very good quality work. I am pleased with his contribution and wish him every success in the future."
